Win a cool Million!

I bet your first reaction is “Yeah Right, What sort of scam is this” - Well, I can tell you that it was my First reaction!

When I came across the bid4prizes website with the big flashy banner advertising the chance to win $1Million I started investigating. Come on, who gives away such a large cash Prize - well I can confirm that this website will! I spent the time to read up everything about the site and discovered what it is all about.

Now, you can Enter and bid on the sweepstake prizes - and one of the current prizes is a 3 Series BMW! Ok, I went ant looked into the whole thing and found out all about it. You can sign up in 2 ways. The premium member can sign up and use SMS from your mobile phone to “bid” on the prizes. This costs you about $10/mth and lets you bid up to 20 times a day (600 bids a month) either thru the website or via SMS. The other option is that you can sign up from the website and still have the same number of bids, but you are shown ads during the bidding process.

Ok, I Finally worked out how they can give away prizes - it is actually paid for by their sponsors, advertisers and premium members. Anyway, when I looked I found all the contact details, read all the rules, Terms of service etc and only then I was convinced that this is legit.

Just by joining and participating you can earn points - and with your points you can exchange them for Free Gifts depending on the points you get.

It is all pretty easy to do and I’m off to put my bids in on some great prizes now - so see ya!

Be the First to Know

We all tend to have our list of favourite websites and Blogs that we look at from time to time. I came across a great utility website the other day that can let you know when a web page changes. Rather than opening up all of your favourites and going thru them one at a time Web page monitoring can do it all for you and send you the results.

Changedetect offers a Free web service that will monitor not a website, but a web page for any changes to it. When I looked at How it Works it is pretty simple from a user’s point. All you do is log into your account, load up the URL of the page you want to watch and then when the page changes you can see it in your control panel. The best part is that the actual changes are colour coded making it easy to see what has changed.

The Benefits of using a web based service for this should be obvious. Like other web based software you don’t need to download anything and run the risk of installing software from an unknown source.

I logged into the Demo admin panel just to get a feel of what is on offer. I was pretty blown away by the Features available. You can bulk import your bookmarks, set up a schedule for monitoring changes in pages and even select the notification option when a page changes.

A Nifty service that I have already signed up to, I give it a big thumbs up.

Website advertising

There is much talk today about Web Site Advertising and Search Engine Optimization tips, and how to land higher in a SE’s (Search Engine) SERPS (Search Engine Results Position). But little is talked about how properly used “White Hat” SEO techniques will inadvertently assist in website accessibility.

Most times it’s very true, that marketing a websites and accessifying a website will butt heads. Accessibility states that content is king, and end-user usability/accessibility must prevail before any marketing hype - and especially any “black hat” usage. SEO has stated in the past that alls fair in love and SERPS! Accessibility was not considered, sometimes not even a option.

Well, fast forward into the ever evolving world of SEO. Content has always been prime SEO consideration, but never more than now. In fact, content - and more importantly for this article - accessible content stands as the basis for all SEO work. Next to the high priority of obtaining Incoming Back links (IBL) from that high PR (PageRank) site that drive so many SEO professionals crazy, there is, “The Copy” (The Content).

Keyword rich copy is important, yes, but now it seems more than ever, that the actual layout, or page markup – of a website – needs to be rich. Rich in accessibility. If you think about it, when a user has problems accessing a site, whether it be inaccessible navigation, or content way “below the fold” - while advertisements about Viagra are at the top of the page, what do you think a SE’s searchbot will think (can they think?)

SE’s are becoming much more capable in their discernment of a page or site that is targeting real people, or just trying to make an AdSense buck. So the shift has been for the good of accessibility!

When a person wants a website built for their Mom-and-Pop store, what I like to ask them is a very simple question (among many other questions of course), “do you have an older Aunt/Uncle/relative that has a sight impairment, or do you know of anyone who suffers from any disability?” Most times, statistics tell us that they do know of a loved one who fits that category. I then launch into my “Accessibility Statement”. As I evangelize the accessibility movement (Web Design Standards Movement), I most likely will get the reply of, “that sounds great…but will that help my website be on Google’s top ten in one month?”

I’m sorry to say, but unless you’re linked from Google itself, along with 5 other PR10 sites, you’re gonna be sandboxed for awhile! But – and this is a big but – accessifying your website will most definitely help your SERPS in the long run!

That’s why I’ve been involved in Web Standards for four years now. As a member of the Web Standards Group, as well as membership in the Guild of Accessible Web Designers, I strive to achieve maximum accessibility in designs, while using the latest, cutting-edge eXtensible HyperText Mark-up Language/CSS markup. These coding practices fully validate with the W3C standards for XHTML/CSS, as well as comply with the W3C’s WAI - A, AA, or AAA standards.

Learn to be Funny

You know I have met so many funny and witty people in all my years of life, and then I have also met some people that thought they were funny and witty but they just weren’t.

Some actors lean how to be funny or how to be witty , and they go off and make millions of dollars being funny and witty.

Being funny and witty comes natural to some and others may never be funny and witty no matter how hard they try, the will never learn to be funny .

Most funny and witty people become entertainers simple for the fact that many people pay to see funny and witty people in action and will sit through hours of funny and witty acts on stage.

You might wonder why I have mentioned the ” Funny and Witty” so many times in this blog post….Well maybe I too was trying to be funny and witty by posting funny and witty every other word.

You might not find that funny and witty…….or maybe you will……..

You Decide

WhoGets it. While looking for Freebies the other day, I came across this site where you can register and have the chance to win some great prizes. You are probably wondering what the catch is - and after looking, I cannot see any. Whogets.com is something different than I have ever seen - you sign up, then you enter your name for any of the prizes you would like. The 1st stage is where everyone who is interested registers for a prize, then the fun begins. What happens next is that out of everyone who registers, there is a random selection of 7 members who are in the Final. Now, the final 7 get the chance to say in 100 words why they should win, and ALL members get the chance to vote on who should win the prize.

I have not seen this concept before, and I have registered and have put my name forward for a couple of the current prizes - I just have to hope that I am in the finals for some of them! The beauty about this is that luck plays the part of being selected as a finalist then the members play the part of voting and deciding Who Gets It. Each stage is normally about 2 weeks, so there is plenty of time to register and if selected try and convince everyone to vote for you!

Now at first, I was wondering why anyone would give away prizes like this and after thinking about it I decided it must be that the people offering the prize are doing what all advertisers do and that is to try and get their brand out there and recognised. Lets face it, by giving away a few items and getting a product in front of hundreds of people it is probably quite cheap to do as opposed to running an advert on TV or in Magazines.
